SOFIA QUINTERO (NEW YORK)
1. What keeps you feeling beautiful? If there's a song that reflects your vibe, what would that song be? What is the color of clothing that you would most likely wear to feel wonderful this season?
Nothing keeps me feeling beautiful like a deep, hearty laugh. Laughter not only makes me feel beautiful, it makes me feel connected to everything else in the world that is beautiful as well as invincible to anything negative. My favorite dress this season is orange.I'm talking Avenue Q orange, LOL! It flatters my figure and shows off my tan. Plus, orange is the color of the sacral chakra which influences creativity and sexuality. When the sacral chakra is balanced, one is in touch with one's personal power which facilitates quick recovery from disappointments. My industry is rife with fits and starts as it is, and they've been further exacerbated by this difficult economy so orange keeps me persevering and optimistic. It is difficult to choose just one song to describe my vibe at any given time. Music evolves, and so do I. J
2. Tell us about Sister Outsider Entertainment, LLC. Under the name,Black Artemis, you penned the novels "EXPLICIT CONTENT" and"PICTURE ME ROLLIN". Tell us about your novel BURN.
Sister Outsider is the multi-media production company I co-founded with Elisha Miranda (who wrote The Sista Hood under the pen name E-Fierce.) We're on a mission to create quality, conscientious entertainment for multicultural audiences. For example, we just finished producing our first off-Broadway show Pandora'swhich combined ten monologues and seven films to reveal the complexity of the Latina LGBTQI experience. Sister Outsider is also in pre-production with Sangria Street, our internet series which has been described as a Latina Sex in the City.
As Black Artemis I write feminist hip hop noir. Or you can say that I write novels for women who live hip hop even when hip hop fails to love them in return. In a Black Artemis novel, you always get three things - a complex female protagonist, a crime story and an element of hip hop culture. My latest novel Burn is about a female bail bond agent who is searching for a missing graffiti artist and uncovers a deadly health care scam. Now I'm collaborating with artist Urban Envy on a graphic novel series called The Miniskirt Mafia. It's very exciting because there are so few women in that scene never mind women of color and/or our sisters representing hip hop.
3. With your successful experiences ranging allowing you to connect with people around the globe, what are some of your day to day activities?
Being a working artist requires one to also be a business person so when I'm not writing, I'm helping to build Sister Outsider. That can involve anything from meeting with industry executives to completing a host of administrative tasks that are not particularly interesting but necessary. I'm also an activist and still sit on the board of Chica Luna Productions, the nonprofit I co-founded. Improving and expanding the programming that we have there as well as fundraising for them takes considerable time, but, that, too, is necessary. Building an infrastructure for change is as important - even more powerful - than anything I can do as an individual artist. That's precisely why we need social justice nonprofits such as Chica Luna and socially conscious businesses like Sister Outsider.
4. What do you do for fun? What new fun thing would you like to try?
At the top of the list is spending quality time with my family and friends. A good time for me is breaking bread and having great conversations with the people that matter most to me. Other than that, I'm quite the dilettante who's always trying my hand at something new. I've come to embrace that about myself and revel in it. Last summer I took a class at the Scratch DJ Academy. This summer I've taken up birdwatching - you'd be surprise at some of the beauties you'll meet at the Bronx Botanical Garden! I mean, I love to read books and watch movies, but that's too closely related to work so I nudge myself to get out of my head and spend more time in my body and spirit.
5. One thing on my Life List is to find my soul mate.
6. What/Who keeps your grounded in this ever changing world? What does the next 12 months hold for Sofia Quintero?
My family - both the one I was born into and the one I have created among a handful of close friends - keeps me grounded. Outside of them, I definitely feel blessed to have a genuine community of like-minded spirits both within my industries (which is particularly hard to find) and without. I'm still on a quest of developing a personal spiritual praxis so one thing I hope to accomplish in the next twelve months is the creating my own sacred text. As for the creative projects, in addition to some of the other things I already mentioned, I'm working on my first young adult novel called Efrain's Secret which will be published by Knopf in 2009.
7. What are 2 qualities that you prefer in a mate at this point in your life?
Honesty is incredibly important to me, starting with self-awareness. I also need someone whose sense of himself as a man is progressive and self-defined i.e. not dependent on patriarchal ideas of masculinity. In many ways, I'm not a traditional or "typical" woman, so I'm holding out for an extraordinary guy.
8. Who gave you 1 really good piece of advice and what was it?
During a particularly trying situation, our mentor Lillian Jimenez once told Elisha and me, "Learn the lesson while the stakes are low." There was the obvious message about being mindful of what we were learning at that time and remembering to apply applying it to any future, similar scenarios. However, there was another, subtle gift which was the gift of perspective. The situation - as painful as it was in the moment - truly was nowhere near as bad as it could've been. In a way, the fact that we were in it was a reflection of fortune that had come our way. And it was evident that not only would we get through it, we'd be better for having experienced it for when the bigger blessings - and the challenges that tend to accompany them - to come.
9. What piece of business advice would you like to share?
Some people say never do business with friends or family. I say it's rare but possible. When Elisha and I became friends in1999, we had grown so close so quickly then when we decided to work together,we had an honest and transparent conversation about our ambitions and boundaries and how that might translate in our expectations of each other.Ultimately, we agreed that if the project threatened our friendship, we would let it go because we both believe that if one is truly secure in one's skills and talents, there will always be another project. That said, before embarking on any major joint ventures with individuals or organizations that seem to share a mission, start with a smaller project to see if you truly do possess the compatible values, ethics, practices, etc. Maybe it will turn out that you weren't meant to do business together, but if everyone involved truly values the preexisting relationship in the first place, a "failed" collaboration might actually result in a deeper friendship!
10. Put in order of favorite: Good Food, Good Shoe AND Good Night Sleep? Good food, goodnight sleep, good shoe. Occasionally, good night sleep before good food, but good shoe always last.
11. What word would best describe you right now? Optimistic

A Beautiful Mind welcomes
TIA WALKER (NEW YORK)
Is there a color that you like to wear this season that induces vibrant thoughts? Not sure but I would say--Purple or Eggplant I love it! Hated it growing up but would love to wear more of it to get away from deep red which I used to wear constantly! Both colors show strength and vibrancy though.
Do you meditate, pray or/and take time to mentally relax? Pray? Are you kidding ? OF COURSE! I mean I think I should pray LOTS more than I do but a relationship with a higher being just like with a human being needs to be cultivated. I should pray more for sure. I pray every few days, It should be daily. It was daily when I was growing up because that us how I was raised.
It was started expressly so that I could apply for press credentials for fashion week in September of 2005. I was already going to shows anyway but wanted to officially do it. I then registered in February 2006 and began blogging the shows, as a result I was one of the first bloggers ever to officially over Fashion Week in New York City. There were only 2 others at the time that did the same ( Fashiontribes.com & Glam media). Not even the big fashion mags had started blogs or blog coverage yet. I was very lucky-- timing is everything. Now I am viewed as a trusted reliable outlet offering accurate, well versed reporting with journalistic integrity. I can get into almost anything I ever hoped to cover in virtually any genre, people pay me to blog for them based on this fact, THAT is a blessing.
3. What is your favorite era (decade) of Fashion?
The 70's! Pretty much the late 70's. I am a weirdo there are probably much better periods I am sure but the easy flowing boat neck, cowl necks, off the shoulder tops, wrap dresses are cool. The gauchos, wide legged pants and highly texturized fabrics are cool. My mom used to sew a LOT in the 70's and I like that fact that clothing was simple and uncomplicated enough to be duplicated and not simply "purchased". I adore 70's Halston, Diane Von Furstenberg etc...especially the vacation French Riviera resort type clothing!
4. What part of your life's journey lead you on your educational path?
I was not even planning to go to college. I was FORCED. I was doing a little modeling and thought I could do a LOT of modeling. It never happened quite like that so I am glad that I went to college. I am especially glad that I majored in History & minored in Art History. My original major was Communications but I ended up switching and I am glad that I did! I am more well rounded. I can speak on art and understand art in away that I would not have been able to otherwise.
5. With your other successful experiences (such as being a TV Host) allowing you to connect with people across the globe, what are some of your day to day activities? What EXCITES you about any ONE of your day to day activities?
I am a professional blogger so I connect with people over the internet which of course is world wide It is exciting for sure. I get most excited when I do a really good post, as strong one , one that I feel a LOT of people will relate to--not just one specific group. Breaking news ones are always interesting!
6. What do you do for fun? What new fun thing would you like to try?
Well I like to do adventurous things for fun. I would like to go white water rafting or something to do with the water.
7. One thing on my Life List is that I'd love to do the red carpet at the Oscars, I love to go to Hawaii with someone really cool and deserving that's (2) things sorry.
8. What/Who keeps your grounded in this ever changing world?
My mother, she always pounds me back to reality with the sentiment..."well how are you going to do that?"
9. What are 2 qualities that you prefer and respect about your mate at this point in your life?
I do not have a mate currently but I would say intelligence and honesty. Without those (2) things you have very little. Intelligence will lead a man to the proper decisions I would hope and honesty will keep him grounded, but really I require honesty to me directly to me if no one else--SECRETS kill a relationship.
10. Who gave you 1 really good piece of advice early on and what was it?
I am not sure I have ever been given any advice out right. I guess that success isn't overnight. That would be the case for me I have been at this all in some form, for years. Where's my emmy damn it! No seriously not TV, but just at being who I am, being known, known for good work, people looking up to you or wanting to know how you do things, that takes time. Patience is everything-- I struggle with it every day. I am a "give it to me now" type of chick.
11. What piece of business advice would you like to share?
Never underestimate ANYONE. I think some of the biggest faux pas' people make is writing other people off. Think that perhaps they are insignificant when they a person or group may be insignificant one day & on top the NEXT. So I believe in no bridge burning but in diplomacy . Although sometimes people really can be insignificant it is our job to be gracious to them.
12. Brownstone, Town House OR Condominium?
Town House definitely and Brownstone they are not all that unrelated. I like the homeiness the feeling of space the possibility of high-ceilings, even a backyard. Condominium implies High -rise and well I am not a high-rise kind of chick, they are great for parties like a visit to other people's homes but I find them to be real death traps--sorry! I mean how does one really ever expect to get out of a condominium in an EMERGENCY? no thanks, I do not care how opulent!
Put In order of importance: Great Food- Great Sleep-Great Mate. And why did you chose your 1st choice?
Great Mate, Great Sleep, Great Food. OK normally I would go for the food first because I am a total foodie. However at this point in life what is good food if you have no mate? So a great mate is first. As I have had trouble sleeping for about 7 years now, don't ask, great sleep is imperative it helps one to think straight and perform at your best levels
13. What word would best describe you right now? Restless. I am truly a restless spirit. Can't Stop, won't stop...WAIT isn't that Diddy?

A great addition to my day/night regimen. With a wonderful medley of carrot, avocado, cucumber, apple and aloe feeding the most delicate area of my face, I was delighted by how well it sustains a great lift and brightness.
My favorite product of the bunch! I love the scent and the combination of using it with the eye cream. It was more than what I ever expected it to be. The grapeseed and cranberry ingredients really came together to form something worthy of day and night application for me. It goes well under the SPF 30 Mineral Sheer Moisturizer (which is divine on the face with ample coverage without feeling oily) or even alone. I highly recommend this one for a rejuvenating treat.
Green Apple Mousse Body Cleanser
Leaves my skin feeling renewed with a hint of a tingle head to toe. I actually anticipate the fruity scented foam's glycerin properties to keep me cleansed beyond compare. It does not go on harsh nor does it dry out my skin. It's a keeper.
Green Apple Hydration Mask
Is greatly appreciated. It's alpha lipoic acid, lemon juice and Vitamin C packs a powerful pull of impurities from my body that left me feeling even more upbeat than I normally am. I use it 3 times a week generously on my neck, back and chest for 10 minutes. I can see why the oils of rosehip, primrose and manderin are considered essential oils that work wonders. After wards, you may actually feel yourself rinsing off the day of stress with this one.
Cleansing Milk
Removes even the slightest make up from the smallest areas in a soothing manner still. I washed my face with it day and evening only to be lead to a scent that is indescribably nice. With a cleanser born of raspberry, white grapes and aloe vera, how can it be anything else except yummy to the touch? My finger tips and the tip of my cheeks thank you for this one.
